I’m taking on the K’s for R U OK? challenge!

This July, I’m making a commitment to run every day and clock my K’s for R U OK?

I feel very strongly for mental health. For anyone who knows me, might think that sounds a little contradicting since I have been stubborn and guilty of not seeking help in the past. I understand that sometimes it may feel easier/less stressful to ignore all the bad and pretend it doesn't exist, but that is one of the main reasons I am taking part in this challenge. To have a positive influence on others, to encourage, to raise awareness and to simply make known to anyone suffering that they are not alone.

I have experienced mental illness up close with Friends, Family and Colleagues and understand how different each case can be. All of them are heart breaking - no person on this Earth should have to feel like they are worthless, ever. I believe each case, no matter the severity, should be accompanied by some form of help. If seeking professional help seems too daunting at the time, (which I promise is not scary) please try and talk with a trustworthy friend or family member.

For the last five years, if not more (I try not to keep count) I have struggled with a fairly ugly, ongoing battle of Depression. It's caused a pretty stressful toll on myself and those around me. Almost everyday I experience the same white noise, the same numbness, the same heavy weight in my heart that tells me "I am a burden" "everyone would be happy and stress-free without having to think about you". When I was admitted into Hospital, one of the nurses in ED said something I'll never forget, she said: "You're going to come out of this, now is the time to lean on your family and friends shoulders, because they're going to pull you through. Eventually I promise, you will stand back up on your feet". At that point in time, someone could have told me I had won a million dollars and I wouldn't have bat an eyelid, so I wasn't too enthused about her comment. But in time I realised how simple, yet so powerful it was. Please do not underestimate how one simple conversation could go. Check on your friends. Don't ignore cries for help. Asking if they are okay goes an incredibly long way.

Personally, this challenge has come at a pretty difficult time for me but I guess that just makes it more of a challenge. Something to fight for.

Please support my efforts by donating, and together let's get everyone asking R U OK?, starting conversations and changing lives!
