Half Marathon?? Half Crazy??
Hey Everyone!
As you may or may not know up until 1st January 2024 I was NOT a runner. I am quite content to walk kilometres on end but up the pace? No way Jose.
Just like every new year, the talk of resolutions and goals rises and almost drowns us. I decided to be a little cliche and take up running.
My initial goal was to run 5km continuously (which I am very close to reaching!!) but I got a little ahead of myself and signed up to the Melbourne Half Marathon after just 2 runs.
So now I have from now until October to not only achieve my initial goal but also get my butt into gear to run 21.1km!
Not only am I working towards this goal to improve my physical health but also my mental health.
In the past 12 months, I was not my best self at all. I developed anxiety as a result of burn out and spent most of the last year feeling like death warmed up to be honest. This may come as a surprise to most as I am extremely good at keeping my shit together and putting on a mask, something I am currently working on breaking down as it isn't a bad thing to vulnerable from time to time.
Thankfully, I have an amazing support network of friends and family behind me that I was able to lean on, reach out to and, who also encouraged me to seek help.
Fortunately for me, my anxiety never reached levels where I considered taking my own life but there are many out there who aren't so lucky.
About 8 people take their own lives in Australia every day.
For every death, it’s estimated another 30 people will attempt suicide.
89% of people report knowing somebody who has made an attempt.
I want to help change these numbers.
After my own experience with anxiety and feeling like life was all a little too much and also some of those around me, I was inspired to raise money for R U OK?.
R U OK?’s vision is of a world where we are all connected and protected from suicide.
Their mission is to inspire everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and support anyone struggling with life.
By inspiring people to take the time to ask, “Are you OK?” and listen, we can help people who are struggling with life to feel connected long before they even think about suicide.
So stay tuned for some fun events, crazy challenges and updates on my occasional trips down struggle street on my way to training for a Half Marathon!
