Intro
Tuesday 23rd Jun Since January this year there has been at least 5 youth suicides just in Geelong. That's 5 too many, obviously I know that we can't save them all but what i do know is that more needs to be done. This got me thinking, what can I as an individual, that's when I stumbled across the walk/run for RUOK. I will be walking in the dark because those i lost were in a dark place when they took their own life. I will also be carrying a backpack that will have weights because I know they would have been carrying a lot of emotions around with them. I thought how many kms would be enough? Then I thought well why not use their date of birth and date of death? But then I realised it would be their age I go by. Because for those years they lived on this earth, that's where all the memories and special moments with them were created. So first my cousin Stephen who was 27, its 27kms for you. Natalie Rowe who I knew from North shore football 14 years young 14kms for you, Zac Harvey who i also knew from North Shore 15kms for you, Kevin who I never got to meet but was a good friend of my sisters 43kms for you, Chris Curran who was a family friend 38kms for you and lastly the one that hurt the most Lisa Castle 55kms for you. Thats a total of 192kms which I'm going to round up to 200km. I know times are rough at the moment but its given me more motivation to do it. With people loosing their jobs, not being able to see loved ones i know times are tough. Your video was touching. I too lost my good friend when I was 19. His name was Alvin. He wrote about me in his diary days before he died saying I was so good to him. I can’t believe I didn’t see the signs. He hung himself, and shocked me to my core. I listen to “wherever I lay my hat” by Paul young. It played the day I was going to his viewing twice on the radio. I feel that was his message to me. Well done for having a big heart. 💓
