Team La Trobe Moving for Mental Health

Hi Everyone!

In our workplace and wider community at the  La Trobe University, we do our best to look out for each other.

About 8 people take their own lives in Australia every day. For every death, it’s estimated another 30 people will attempt suicide. 89% of people report knowing somebody who has made an attempt.

R U OK?’s vision is of a world where we are all connected and protected from suicide. Their mission is to inspire everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

By inspiring people to take the time to ask, “Are you OK?” and listen, we can help people who are struggling with life to feel connected long before they even think about suicide. In doing so, we are also asking  "Are we OK?" in community.

Thank you so much for your encouragement and support, with every step of offering helping our Care of Country and each other.

Best wishes to all those joining the campaign!

Martin

Off the Mark on R U Ok? day.

Thursday 14th Sep
Hi Everyone!

I've taken the plunge today to  launch R U OK? for a friend-mate who took his own life recently. I've been reflecting on this loss and wanting to 'take action' in some way to honor him, his family and our friendship,  and the many other thousands of people impacted by suicide in some way. I stumbled across this campaign at my new workplace at  La Trobe University and it was natural step in. Thanks to Bruce for organising the La Trobe Moving for Mental Health group.

I'm dedicating the merit of all activities that nurture my mental health to my friend  and all those impacted my suicide - cycling to work, running, Zenny on a meditation cushion, reading, sleeping-eating well, gardening,  work with vulnerable families, connecting with colleagues/ friends/family/community  and holding laughter deeply when it arises.

You welcome to send any words of encouragement or donations!

Best wishes to you mental health and wellbeing!

Cheers, Martin
