I'm fundraising for a great cause!
For many years I have planned to paddle the Murray River . Now I have the opportunity to paddle in the Massive Murray Paddle , a 415 km journey from Yarrawonga to Gunbower. Eric Barnes, father of wonderful friend Richard Barnes, who will also be paddling, will very kindly be transporting my kayak to the start and then home from the finish. This will allow me to cycle from Sydney down to the start via the Snowy Mountains, passing through Cooma. Heading home from Gunbower via Wagga Wagga and Boorowa.
Circumnavigating Tasmania with Richard in 2007 was an amazing experience, but it taught me a very important lesson. That if I do something just for myself it leaves me with an empty feeling. So when I cycled to Perth & then to Cairns I was included raising funds for others, firstly the Black Dog Institute and then RUOK? I have chosen RUOK? again because it is an organisation that i can relate to but also because it incorporates a way of life...reaching out to friends, family & the community on a daily basis to make sure they are OK.
I have decided to fundraise for R U OK? to help spread their message and help prevent suicide.
About 8 people take their own lives in Australia every day.
For every death, it’s estimated another 30 people will attempt suicide.
89% of people report knowing somebody who has made an attempt.
I want to help change these numbers.
R U OK?’s vision is of a world where we are all connected and protected from suicide.
Their mission is to inspire everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and support anyone struggling with life.
By inspiring people to take the time to ask, “Are you OK?” and listen, we can help people who are struggling with life to feel connected long before they even think about suicide.
