Emily Do - Let's Start More Life-Saving Conversations

By Emily Do Join Me

I'm fundraising for a great cause!

I have decided to fundraise for R U OK? to help spread their message and help prevent suicide.

About 8 people take their own lives in Australia every day.

For every death, it’s estimated another 30 people will attempt suicide.

89% of people report knowing somebody who has made an attempt.

I want to help change these numbers.

R U OK?’s vision is of a world where we are all connected and protected from suicide.

Their mission is to inspire everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

By inspiring people to take the time to ask, “Are you OK?” and listen, we can help people who are struggling with life to feel connected long before they even think about suicide.

Thank you so much for your support, together we will make a difference.

2.05 is what I had on my Garmin, 2.07 was the official time. 17 minutes faster than last year

Done and dusted!

Sunday 5th May
Some of you may think of me as a runner, and in the last two years I  could be easily classed as one, but 6 -7 years ago I was told by my doctors that due to no cartilage in both my knees, I would not be able to do any high impact sports, especially running.  For years after that, as much as I loved sports, I adjusted my exercise to avoid high-impact sports completely, Then two years ago a close friend signed up for the London Marathon and I offered to support her by doing the marathon training with her virtually through Strava.  I committed to going as far as my knees would allow me and by some miracle, my legs held up and if anything stronger than ever.  Thanks to the encouragement of friends in Australia, I signed up for my first half marathon last year. I still had no idea whether I would be capable and how my legs would hold up, but they did.

In total nine weeks of training, with a few bumps along the way (from blisters, a potentially sprained ankle in the final week) and stacking it earlier on in the training, it is all about adjusting, listening to your body, staying consistent with your training and really to yourself.  This year I wanted to beat my last year's time for the Hoka Half Marathon (2.24) this year I ran the Hoka in 2.07! Despite rain before the race even started, drizzle along the way, puddles to dodge, and a lot more congestion (thanks to the puddles) on the roads than usual, I finished the race injury-free. My main focus was simply to be present, one step at a step and to run my own race (and listen to the body  - not overdoing it and being aware of any niggles).  It was a cold wet run, however, with a focus on the present moment and belief in self, anything is possible.

If you've never run a half marathon or want to start with a 5km, if you're going to start tomorrow, I recommend:-

- Starting off small
- Listening to your body
- Consistent with your training
-  Keep the promise to yourself to do the training
- Run YOUR race
- Be kind to yourself (you will go through ups and downs, but it is a process, consistently show up and you can do it)
- Have belief in self

Last run before the race

Saturday 4th May
5km is a lot easier than my 18km run on Sunday just gone. Let's hope it's as clear as this morning.

2 sleeps to go - Not long to go.

Friday 3rd May
After training in the heat for the last week or so, I come back to rain, wind and cold temperatures. Regardless I am determined to cross that finish line. For those running the half marathon good luck and and see you at St Mary's Church.

Help me raise money for a worthy cause

Thursday 14th Mar
I have chosen R U OK? as my chosen charity as I believe in the power of human connection and with one question, it can do a lot for an individual. During times when I've struggled, that one question allowed me to open up and break out of my thoughts and the opportunity to share the problem.

We all go through moments in our lives where we feel lost, alone, or at a crossroads for one reason or another, even the strongest of us, which is why I encourage you to talk to your friend, your family, or your colleague and ask the question that the person may need to hear.
